Different Types of Door Locks

In this blog entry, the professional Daytona locksmith service team here at Green Locksmith Daytona will detail the most common forms of door locks that we install at homes and businesses throughout the Daytona area.

Deadbolt locks

These come in a range of categories including single cylinder, double cylinder, lockable thumbturn, and vertical deadbolts. Single cylinder deadbolts help make residents safe in the event of an emergency, but can be a security risk with the reach of someone reaching the interior thumbturn through a broken window. There should always be a distance between doors with single cylinder deadbolts and windows. Double cylinder deadbolts will require unlocking from the interior to be able to edit. This can be dangerous in the event of an emergency that requires fast evacuation. Lockable thumbturn addresses the above issues by combining a thumbturn echoes that can be turned on and off at will. Vertical deadbolts are installed at the top of the door making it nearly impossible to pry open the door. Deadbolts are often used combined with smart lock controls or electronic keypad locks.

Multipoint Locks

These locks cover most of a door’s height, providing excellent security. They have multiple deadbolts that extend and retract at different points. They usually lock at the top, middle, and bottom of the door. They also help save energy by making doors more weathertight.

Mortise Locks

Also called rim locks, these locks have intricate interior structure and are minted inside a cut pocket in the door rather than on the door’s surface. They are durable and break-in resistant, and come usually with 3 or (ideally) 5 levers for maximum security. They are often paired with entry glass doors, commercial doors, and external residential doors..

Cam Locks

These L shaped locks resemble cameras and are made of a cam component that operates the cylindrical lock. They come in different forms of metal and sizes, and are operated with flat keys that require rotation or pressing when activating, a tubular key that needs to be rotated, or combination lock that has a secure numerical code that needs to be input. They are ideal for low security areas, as they don’t provide an amazing amount of security. They are ideal for cabinets, ockers, mailboxes, or even bathroom doors.

Disc Locks

These locks are considered a modern form of padlocks and can actually be detached, unlike many other lock types. They provide superior security and durability to the traditional padlock. They have heavy and thick construction, making them very durable, and use a pin tumbler mechanism.

Knob Locks

These locks have a locking mechanism placed directly inside the door knob that needs to be rotated in order to open the door. They lack capacity to provide robust security, and are very easy to break into them. They should only be combined with other looks like deadbolt locks, or only used for privacy in interior rooms like bedrooms or bathrooms.
